A leading DIY chain was shocked by the results of a process analysis, carried out between the Store Process Improvement Group and Paxar’s Retail Price Management Consultancy Team. This took place over several months in five stores, where the results from time studies, process flow charting and general observation led to the Group’s final recommendations.

At the time of the study, staff were updating shelf edge labels by walking between the shelf and the office printer, checking items off a paper list as they went. This process alone was calculated to be almost 200 hours per store every year.

The chain introduced a new portable labelling and price verification system from Paxar and immediately benefited from improvements in price and information accuracy. The threat of costly fines was removed and staff could be released to perform other valuable functions.

However, there is more to the new system than Paxar’s leading edge software and equipment. Our team also looked at the most basic element in the solution: the label. Because DIY equipment is often heavy and coarse, labels are easily damaged – causing delays at the checkout. A recipe for customer dissatisfaction!

The system also gives the chain the opportunity to create ‘mobile checkouts’ and allow customers to pay for goods anywhere in the store.
